Why poker is like...Donald Trump

Why poker is like...Donald Trump

Mr Trump is a highly successful businessman who has made probably billions of dollars. He likes people to see how successful he is by naming all his most prestigious buildings after himself.

In poker there's an element of that too, when you see the huge pile of cash being wheeled in to the final table at the WSOP. Poker is all about money and poker players and especially poker tournament organizers like to see the money on the poker table.

Why poker is like...Troy the movie

Troy had 200 million spent on it but despite that was universally seen as a major FLOP.

In Texas Holdem poker the flop is the three cards that are turned up aftert he first round of betting. Often there is no flop if there is strong betting in the initial stage after the hand have been dealt.

Why poker is like...Fall (Autumn)

Fall (Autumn in the UK) is when the weatherstarts to TURN. Summer is over and winter is ahead of us.

In Texas Holdem poker the turn card is the fourth community card dealt face up on the table. It is used along with the flop, the river and the concealed cards in your hand to make the best 5 card hand.

Why poker is like...The Waltons

Why poker is like...The Waltons

The Waltons were a family of nice folks from the mountains, however they had one major problem. There was mom and dad, grandma and grandpa and about seven kids, plus dogs and the obligatory "stranger" who turned up every week and was instantly taken in and given a bed. In other words they had a full house!

In poker a full house is a lot better for you than if you're a Walton kid squashed in a bed with three brothers and a dog. A full house is three of something and a pair of something else and can only be beaten by bad luck, ie four of a kind or a straight flush.

So a full house - great for poker players but not so goodif you're a Walton!

Why poker is like...The Amazon

Why poker is like...The Amazon

The Amazon is a mighty river that is a lifeblood to many, but has also killed many people too.

In Texas Holdem poker the "River" is the last card dealt face up on the table, the final "community card". It will decide who wins the hand and many fortunes have been won and lost on the river.

The river in poker is your best friend if you're trying to make a hand after starting off in a poorer position than your opponent, but it can be a deadly enemy for those poker players trying to hold on to an advantage that they have.

Why poker is like...Michael Moore

Mr Moore is a bit of a crusader, he's always on a rant against the US government, big business, war, and anything else he doesn't agree with. Good for him, whether you agree with his opinions or not you should agree that he has the right to express them in a free world.

But like poker, Michael Moore isn't going to change the world. We love poker and to some of us it's an all-consuming obsession, but ultimately it's only a game. It's entertaining and people can make loads of money, but it's still just a game.

So Michael, how about calming down a bit and taking up poker!

Why poker is like...The world's time zones

Why poker is like...The world's time zones

The time zones mean that people are all doing different things at the same time, some are going to bed while others are just getting up.

When you play online poker you should be aware of this too and factor in the different time zones into your overall strategy. If you're looking for a freeroll with fewer players for example, try and find one that runs either very early or very late US time.

It's estimated that 80% of all online players are American so if you can catch a game while they're sleeping you're in with a bigger chance!

Why poker is like...The Teenage Ninja Turtles

Why poker is like...The Teenage Ninja Turtles

These were cartoon characters from the early 90s who loved pizza. It was the only food they were interested in.
Some poker players are only interested in one type of game or another and there's plenty of scope to be specific and find your own "poker niche".

You can choose from Limit, Pot Limit and No Limit if your game is Texas Holdem poker, or there's Omaha and stud if you're into those instead.  Combine that choice with a vast range of staking levels and the choice of multi-tablesor single poker table and there are literally hundreds of options.

So the bottom line is it's good for your poker profits to specialize.

Why poker is like...Tennis

Why poker is like...Tennis

The great thing about tennis is the scoring system. You can never be beaten until your opponent scores the right number of points, so as long as you are still in the game, you've always got a chance.

Poker is the same, you can be down to a few dollars in chips against opponents with hundreds, but as long as you have the proverbial "chip and a chair" there's a chance you can get back in the game.

Why poker is like... A Problem Child

If you have a problem child you will know that there are different approaches to be used in dealing with him. You can take the hard line and be strict or take a more softly softly approach and hope to persuade him to see the error of his ways..

In poker too you need to use different styles of play to cope with different situations. If you're at an extremely tight table where players are only willing to play top hands, your poker style will be different from a table where there are five or six players in every flop.

Why poker is like...Japan

Japan is an amazing country that has totally reinvented itself. It grew out of the ashes of the Second World War to become an industrial and economic superpower.

Poker too has taken the opportunity to reinvent itself and become "respectable". TV coverage and the stardom afforded to the top players (not to mention the vast amounts of money!) mean that poker is now accepted by most people as a legitimate mainnstream entertainment.

In poker too there can only really be one winner at the major tournaments. Yes poker players can take home big paychecks from the tables, but only one of them can be the champion.

Sometimes it goes beyond mere money, it's the glory that's the real driving force for the world's elite poker players.

Why poker is like...A late night party

A late party often leaves you feeling below your best. Maybe you drank a little too much or whatever you did, you can feel below par the next day.

In poker too you sometimes need to play when you're not at your best, you might have committed to play in a tournament but not be feeling at your peak.
Sorry - you just need to tough it out! Sit back and play less hands, wait for the monsters, but just get through it.

Tomorrow is another day and you could be feeling on top of the world!

Why poker is like...Sin City

Why poker is like...Sin City

OK I admit I missed this when it was out, I've just seen the DVD. Sin City is an amazing film that is both visually striking and extremely violent but it goes much deeper too. On the surface it is a simple story told in comic book style but there are some terrific characters in there and some brilliant plots and subplots.

Poker also works on many levels; at first glance it is a very simple card game where the player with the best hand wins the prize but the more you get into it the more complicated and intricate it becomes.

It is more a game of strategy and psychology than a game of cards and there is always more to learn.

Nobody likes standing in a bus queue, especially when the bus gets full and you need to wait for the next one.

Why poker is like...A Library

If you go to a library, everyone there will have a different idea as to what is the best book or even best category or type of book.

There are a lot of poker books around but most poker players have probably never read a single poker book. However they all have different ideas as to which poker theory is the best. Whether they only play big hands or call a pot raise with 7 2, each poker player's style is as diverse as the books in a library.

There's no "right" or "wrong" way to play poker so play the way that suits you best - and wins you most money!

You either believe in ghosts or you don't, it's as simple as that. With Texas Holdem poker too, you either believe you have the best hand or you don't. Sometimes you'll know for certain, like if there's three Aces on the table and you're holding the other one but other times you'll believe you have the best hand with a pair of 10s.

If you believe you've got the best hand, bet it strongly and win some money from it!

You can hardly ever be absolutely sure you will win a hand in poker, like getting married it could all end in tears with you flat stoney broke!

So Rita turned out to be not exactly a damp squib but certainly a lot less powerful than expected, a bit like the performances of some of the major poker players in recent major poker tournaments.

The good people of the South will fight back against this adversity and will come strong again, and the big poker guys will probably be back on top again soon too.

The Da Vinci Code is a fantastic book that centres on the search for the Holy Grail. Part fact and part fiction it is a rollercoaster novel you can't put down.

However it has upset a lot of people. Literary snobs hate it, but then they hate anything that appeals to the masses. The Catholic church hate it as well as several other organizations mentioned in the book. Like most people though I loved it.

Poker's just like that too, while the majority of people play and enjoy it without affecting anybody else, there's always the miserable killjoys who want to ban it.Live and let live I say, poker will be here a long time after we've gone!

Why poker is like...Running a business

If you run a business of any sort you know that your success or failure depends on taking calculated gambles - or risks as business people prefer to call it. Almost daily you are faced with decisions as to whether you should invest more money in the hope of gaining more customers and sales, or bringing in new employees or a multitude of other business decisions.

In poker the game is all about calculated risks. Do you know where you are in the hand? What are your pot odds? What is your opposition like, can you bully them into laying down their hand and giving you the pot? All these and more are calculated gambles you need to take every time you play poker.

Why poker is like...Your daily newspaper

If you're like me you get a newspaper every day and while it's mostly the same every day, there's always something new and different. I say the same every day because the layout's the same, everything is in the same place so you know where to find it at a glance and a lot of the features are the same each day. But there's always the surprise element that keeps us buying.

Poker tournaments are similar in lots of ways too. The big poker tournaments always attract the same top poker players, and you know you'll find them near the final tables at the end of the tourney. But there's always a suprise element too, someone who shoots through the pack to win a fortune that you'd never heard of before.

That's what makes poker great, the surprises and the fact that the little guy can win too.

Why poker is like...Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks has made a big change in direction going from supermodel to daytime chatshow host.

In poker you also need to change direction sometimes. If you're the type of poker player that only plays the big hands for example, people are going to get wise to your style fairly quickly and will just fold whenever you play a hand.

Changing your style keeps your play unpredictable and makes you a lot more difficult to play against.

By showing their cards, the North Koreans have taken control of the situation and gained the advantage.

Google Earth is the latest great innovation to come from Google, you can download it and spend hours flying around the world zooming in and out of cities. Google's growth is similar to that of poker's, both are now gigantic.

Poker is now widely recognised as the number one online game in the world, an amazing feat since even ten years ago it was still being played only in in private poker tables and casinos. The thing that has allowed both Google and poker to grow at such a rate is of course the internet, online poker is now a multi billion dollar enterprise employing many thousands of people from programers to support workers in the big online poker sites to webmasters earning a living running small independent poker information sites like www.Love-Texas-Holdem.com.

Maybe Google Poker is the next one on their list!

Many of the new internet poker players online are young video game players, a couple of years ago they would have been playing Doom or Tomb Raider but now they've turned their attention to online poker.

Poker has many of the qualities of a video game; strategy, suspense, excitement and competition being the obvious ones but there's also the added factor of personality that sets poker above even the best video games.

Why poker is like...Traffic Congestion
If you drive to work daily there's a good chance you'll meet some traffic congestion along the way. It's something that's out of your hands, you cannot affect what the traffic is going to be like.
The thing is how you deal with the problem.

In poker you will also face situations that are out of control and how you deal with the situation can be the difference between your success in poker and failure. If you place your bets and are waiting for the turn of the cards you need to mentally accept your fate before the cards are shown, win or lose.

Remember there's always an element of luck in poker, don't sweat what you can't change.

Why poker is like...The VMAs

Why poker is like...The VMAs

The VMAs (MTV Video Music Awards) have been all over the news in the last couple of days with the celebrities putting on their smiley faces and expensive outfits to see and more importantly be seen. They are representing the public's expectation of what their image is.

In poker representing is a big part of the game. When you "represent" a hand you play as though you actually had the hand even though you might be on a complete bluff. For example if you have seen the flop with a Jack 10 and there's an ace on the flop, a big bet from you would indicate that you had an Ace, you'd be "representing" having one.

If you're only against two or three players at the most , the chances are that none of them will have an ace so your big bet should take down the pot.

In the news today Italy is to begin a solar energy project where people who site the solar panels on their houses or businesses can get triple the going rate for selling the energy to the power companies.

Like poker freerolls, this is a great example of getting something for nothing, the sun's energy is free and after the equipment is installed there is a regular windfall payment just for having it there.

In poker freerolls, poker players try to win a cash prize donated by the poker site in a free-to-enter poker tournament. The prizes aren't great and the competition is fierce but the freerolls are never short of enthusiatic entrants.

I guess something for nothing will always be a big draw!

Why poker is like...China

Why poker is like...China

Have you noticed recently how big the Chinese economy has become? With 2 billion people working for it, it shouldn't really be that much of a surprise that since they removed the trade barriers and opened up to capitalism the Chinese economy has boomed.

Poker also had to overcome a barrier before it could grow to the position it enjoys today, a psychological barrier put up by those who still thought that poker was the work of the devil. There are still some zealots of course who curse poker, gambling and for that matter enjoying yourself but the vast majority of reasonable people now accept poker as a form of recreation.

And there's a big bonus for the Chinese too, as a nation where a lot of the population like gambling, online poker sites have opened the way for them to take on the west at poker.

Why poker is like...Ray Winstone

Ray Winstone is a British actor in his late forties who suddenly seems to have hit the big time in the US. Ray's been about on UK TV for years and has always been a well respected and well loved actor but now he has 6 movies on the go in Hollywood and he's a major star.

The great thing about poker is that you can do this type of thing too. If you're a sportsman you only have until your early twenties to prove yourself or you will probably never make it, but with poker you can become a star at any age. Even if you've never played poker before and you're in your forties or fifities, you can become a famous poker star just by winning through to the finals of a major poker tournament.

Poker is the great leveller, especially online where you don't even know what age your opponents are - you could be sitting at the poker table online with old grannies or spotty teenagers and you wouldn't know!

Why poker is like...A Horror movie

When you're watching a horror movie, you are always thinking to yourself that things can't get any worse - then they do!

I was watching a poker match on TV recently, Chris Ferguson was heads up against a guy I didn't know from Costa Rica. Chris was just about to experience the same thing, it was as bad as it could get. Chris got dealt pocket Aces to the guy's Ace 10, the guy went all-in and Chris was in dreamland, it's just about as good a situation as you can be in.

The flop was something like Jack 7 9 giving the other guy a glimmer of hope but nothing more, he now had three of the five cards required for a straight. The turn drew gasps, an 8! The other guy now had an open ended straight draw, he had 7 8 9 10 and any 6 or Jack on the river would win him the pot.

Chris must have been twitching slightly but he was still a massive 80%-20% favorite to take the pot. Then there was the horror movie moment as the river produced a 6! The Other guy had pulled off an incredible bad beat - the worst I've ever seen and although he must have been sick to his stomach, Chris was incredibly sporting and gentlemanly about it.

Poker - watch if you dare but don't watch alone!

Why poker is like...Madonna

Why poker is like...Madonna

Madonna is in the news just now after she got injured falling off her horse. If you are old enough to remember Madonna when she first hit it big with "Holiday" and starred in esperately Seeking Susan you might find it incredible how this punky New York street kid has reinvented herself constantly over the years and is now playing the part of an English country lady, from trash to aristocracy in twenty eventful years.

The way that poker has reinvented itself is in a way no less astonishing. The long-held belief amongst many well-to-do folks was that poker was the devil's game and associated only with drinking, fighting and even killing. Poker dens were places that no self respecting upstanding member of the community would ever go near.

Now poker has undergone a complete transformation and is the biggest game in the world. TV stars and celebrities are falling over each other in the rush to appear in poker tournaments. Poker is cool and people want to be associated with it.

Maybe Madonna might think about taking up poker now that she can't get around on her horse for a few months!

Why poker is like...High School exam results

Why poker is like...High School exam results

News in from the UK today that 97% of all A level students have passed their exams. Is this the brainiest nation on earth, or are the exams getting easier to pass?
It seems that almost anyone can pass these exams to one degree or other, just like almost anyone can play poker.

Poker is a very simple game and like most of the best games and sports it takes a short time to learn the basics but a lifetime to master.

If there was an exam in playing poker, probably 97% would pass that too, but only the best can go on and make a living at it.

Why poker is like...iPods

Why poker is like...iPods

iPods are the latest in a long line of music making machines. The poor old Sony Walkman was the last big craze but now looks defunct after the iPod's market dominance. 8 tracks, cassettes, stereo hi-fis have all gone the same way to the great music  reunion in the sky.

Is online poker just the latest fad in video games? It might well account for at least part of it's phenomonal rise in popularity. College kids all over the world are ditching their Playstations and Nintendos in favour of playing poker online - and a lot of them are very good at it too. More and more youngsters are appearing on the televised stages of the major poker tournaments.

But is it just a fad or will poker last longer than the Walkman? Only time will tell.

Why poker is like...Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Why poker is like...Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have topped the latest "sexiest stars" poll. What a surprise! Any time you see a poll like this Brad and Anj aren't going to be far away from the top, especially now with them being a couple.

Poker has it's superstars too, any time there's a major poker tournament happening expect to see the likes of Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer and the rest of the top players in the shake up for places at the final tables.

The cream will always rise to the top as they say, whether it's a beauty contest or a poker tournament.

What about a sexiest poker player award? Now there's an idea! (Clonie for me...)

Why poker is like - Rising gas prices

Why poker is like - Rising gas prices

The price of gas at the pumps in the US has risen to a high of around $2.50 a gallon and nobody's happy about it. In the UK prices have also risen sharply to around $7.50 a gallon, three times as much as the US. It is all about expectation, folks in the US expect to pay low prices and those in the UK expect to pay high prices.

Poker psychology is a lot about expectation too. A wise man once said that whether you expect to succeed or expect to fail, you will probably be right either way. Don't go into your poker games expecting to fail, instead approach them with a positive attitude and expect to win.

You might surprise yourself at how much you can improve with the right mental attitude.

Why poker is like...The Strike at Heathrow Airport

Let's face it, poker is all about gambling. We can talk about tactics and sportsmanship and strategy, but at the end of the day poker comes down to one thing - winning money from your opponents

The strike at Heathrow Airport is all about a gamble too. The workers are on strike in support for 800 catering staff who got sacked, in the hope that they can win them their jobs back. The gamble is that the management will have them reinstated before they lose too much business by the airport being closed.

It's a big gamble and a sort of heads-up poker situation - nobody wants to be seen to be backing down but while they're in a standoff there are no winners, everybody is losing money.

Why poker is like...The Ashes

Why poker is like...The Ashes

The Ashes is an annual cricket match between England and Australia, much like a poker heads-up. There's only two teams that can win the Ashes like the heads up and in a similar way to poker, the cricket is never over while the team still has men left that are not out.

In poker it's said that as long as you have a chip and a chair you have a chance, it is possible to come back from seemingly impossible situations by doubling up a few times.

You need your luck to be in but the great thing about poker is that there's always hope.

Why poker is like...A Day at the Races Part 2

Why poker is like...A Day at the Races Part 2

In a way the horse racing world is divided into two sections that exist in a parallel universe.

On one hand there is the owners and trainers and everybody associated with getting the horses to the racecourse. These tend to be the middle and upper classes, people with money. At the other end is the punter on the street who bets on the horses, typically normal working class.

In the world of poker there's a similar sort of divide; on one hand there's the pro poker players at multi million dollar poker tournaments, while at the other end of the spectrum there's the "guy on the street" who plays for a few dollars with his friends at a table poker game or on the online poker websites.

Why poker is like...A Day at the Races Part 1

Why poker is like...A Day at the Races Part 1

If you've never been to the races you're missing a great day out, the spectacle and excitement of the horses coupled with the social scene is hard to beat. And of course you might even win some money!

Poker players are like racehorses in a way, they are both trained up and focused on the event but on the day might not perform as expected. Horses can be affected by the weather or the course conditions and poker players can lose out to psychological and emotional factors.
